PERSONAL SKETCHBOOK

My sketchbook is a way for me to record important places and events. In my position, I spend a lot of time traveling and the sketchbook allows me an opportunity to explore places in a relaxing manner and to have a record of my experiences. Often bored from sitting in airport lobbies, I find the time useful to finish a composition or sketch that was inaugurated on-site.

Sketching also forces one to focus on the things that the viewer finds important in the composition. Urban spaces, historic structures and the landscape character of a site are important to me as you will see from what is presented in this sketchbook of my work. I will usually quickly but lightly layout the drawing in pencil with quick sketches to be finished later with an overlay of pen and ink. I also have attempted to experiment with a variety of media but have found that I am most comfortable with pen and ink.

This is a pen and ink drawing on a historic church in Taos, New Mexico. New Mexico is my favorite state and offers a lot for the artist.

In this drawing, I used only the dot from an ink pen throughout the entire composition. The dots are thinly placed in areas where sunlight strikes but heavy in the shaded areas. The dots give a very realistic image but, as one can imagine, consume a lot of personal time. This was an early work executed when I first began to take up sketching as a hobby. We used this as the family Christmas card a few years ago.
