Planning/Proc. Implementation - Plan 109:752 on Wednesdays
at 1:30 - 3:20 A Course on Physical Planning and the Development of Regulatory Techniques Used in City Planning Spring Semester 2004 Course Overview This course is designed to serve the needs of planning, design, and engineering professionals in an upper division, graduate format. The course content is intended to both survey the range of regulatory techniques used in professional planning and to offer professional practice in building, land, and development ordinances including local based codes and site planning requirements. To the greatest extent possible, this course will be available in an electronic format contained on this WEB site. I intend to give most of the lectures using PowerPoint slides in the classroom. Lectures are posted on the homepage of the web site. You cannot run them from my server because of security settings. You can, however, these PowerPoint files by "right clicking" the file and then transferring it to your local drive by doing as "save as." It is very important that you explore the WEB site for this course and understand its structure. All outlines, assignments, and course lectures will branch out from this page. The textbook for this course is Larz T. Anderson, Planning the Built Environment, APA Planners Press (2000). Electronic delivery at K-State is a work in progress. We experience frequent internet interruptions at the University, although our local area network here in Seaton Hall (where this WEB originates) has a high degree of dependability. You should be aware that telecommunications courses have some inherent problems because of the nature of software, internet browsers, and bandwidth. In terms of software, you should use the latest versions of all standard software to reduce the amount of frustration in reading and downloading these pages. You should be using Microsoft Windows 98 SE, ME, Windows 2000, or XP as your operating system with Microsoft Explorer 6.0 with the latest updates. Netscape Communicator will not work properly on this site. You should have the most recent copy of a .jpg or .gif viewer such as ACDSee 32, LView Plus, or Thumbs Plus to download, sort, and view my digital photos. Some files will be in Hypertext Markup Language (htm or html files) and Java Script which can be handled by Explorer 6.0. Other files may be in Adobe's Portable Document Format (.pdf) and you will need the PDF Reader Version 5.0 which is available as a free download from the Adobe site [click here for the download]. To submit files to this site you will need Microsoft Word 2000 or 2002 (XP) - you may use WordPerfect version 10 or Version 2000, but file translation is not 100% accurate. If I use electronic slides for the lectures, you must have a copy of Microsoft PowerPoint 2000, or XP. In terms of bandwidth, K-State is a heavy use site and bandwidth is at a minimum during normal university afternoons and evenings. In fact, there may be many evenings when it is impossible to make a reliable connection. I suggest before 10:00 AM in the morning is the best time. Many problems with a WEB site are due to the setting in a browser such as Explorer or Communicator. Make sure than your <page view> is set to a small font and that your are Java Enabled.
